The new NTI Nightguard (as seen below) treats TMJ (TMD),  jaw pain, sore jaws, worn-down teeth, grinding and clenching at night, morning headaches, neck or shoulder pain.

The NTI is the new, comfortable Night-guard that fits only over the front teeth.
The back teeth do NOT touch, and you therefore CANNOT clench or grind at night!

THE NTI Night Splint

Prefabricated matrix

Individually Custom-Fitted.  Small, secure and comfortable!

The NTI keeps the back teeth from touching, bruxing, grinding, or clenching!  This means less clenching and grinding of your teeth while you sleep, and an often-dramatic reduction in jaw soreness and headaches upon awakening, and throughout the day.

Testimonials:

"Dr. Reifman recognized the reason for my jaw pain right away. I was grinding my teeth and clenching my jaw. The device that Dr. Reifman made for my teeth while I waited solved the problem. I wear the device at night and no longer have the terrible pain in my jaw. It is wonderful to be without that pain. Thanks, Doc!"  Joy T. - Encino, CA
"After years of suffering with chronic morning headaches and an increasingly worse stiff neck, I was diagnosed with TMJ disorder. Dr. Reifman fitted me with the NTI in less than an hour. It was easy to get used to wearing it at night. I started to notice improvement in my condition within two weeks. Now, after two months, I no longer have headaches or a stiff neck. The NTI is a simple, comfortable, and permanent solution for TMJ and I would recommend it to anyone with TMJ symptoms."   Noel C. - Sherman Oaks, CA
"My new NTI is great.  With two nights of use, my jaw pain is gone!  I'm not running for the motrin bottle.  I'm so happy!  Thank you Dr. Reifman."    Lynn M. - Sherman Oaks, CA
"Thanks to Dr. Reifman for fixing my bite.  So many dentists I visited before did not to anything (or know what to do) when I told them I had to chew on my right side only.  Dr. Reifman knew exactly what to do to even out my bite - and now I can chew on both sides.  Thanks!"      Kathryn H.  - Arleta, CA
"Dr. Reifman- I cannot thank you enough for helping me get the NTI nightguard, it has changed my life.  I no longer get headaches or tightness around my jaws.  I feel relaxed and know that I am protecting my teeth and jaw.  Thanks for everything, I really appreciate it!"  Michelle N. - Glendale, CA

"One out of five patients wake up with varying degrees of head, neck, or facial pain   They are ideal candidates for an NTI type appliance to wear at night."  However, if treatment is ignored, continued abuse of the TMJ, clenching and grinding CAN lead to the following:

Increasing sensitivity of the teeth to hot and cold drinks.
Loss of natural shape and white color of your teeth.
Increased staining and yellowing of the teeth.
In severe cases, TMJ or clenching problems can lead to  jaw surgery.
There is a greater chance for fractured teeth.
There is an increased chance of root canals.

The NTI Nightguard - A Real Breakthrough in Treating TMJ, Grinding, Clenching, Jaw Pain, and Headaches!

You may have heard Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America discuss this on TV lately.  It's the new miracle that can eliminate most of your headaches - even migraines.  In fact, this little miracle is approved by the FDA specifically for treatment of migraine headaches.

It's a very simple little appliance that clips onto your front teeth.  You comfortably wear it only while you sleep.  It has been proven to relax the muscles and reduce the majority of your headaches, and make any headaches you do get much less severe.  It may even stop the pain on your teeth when you are eating, and make them less sensitive.

Compared to the bulky and often irritating traditional splint, the relatively smaller size of an NTI, and its secure fit provide for excellent patient compliance, while specifically addressing and suppressing the source of the patient's discomfort.

If you feel this exciting, new nightguard could help change your life, call us at 818.990.6659.  It's an easy appointment, and Dr. Reifman (who also has an extensive Bio-mechanical engineering background, with a B.S. and M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from UCLA), can easily explain to you how comfortable the NTI actually is.

How does the NTI actually work?

The NTI is a small, clear, custom-fitted, plastic device that is about 1 inch wide.  It is placed over the upper or lower front teeth (see picture at the top of page).  The opposing front teeth contact against this device in a way that keeps the back teeth from contacting each other. If those back teeth are not allowed to bang, or clench together, the powerful muscles in your temples can't tighten to produce discomfort or pain. It is this clenching that is considered a significant trigger for even migraine headaches! Studies show that the front teeth are the main ones that give feedback to allow these temple and cheek muscles to RELAX, and this is why the NTI contacts only the front teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions About the NTI

Q: What does "NTI" stand for?  A.  Nociceptive (relating to the perception of things that could be harmful); Trigeminal (the nerve that controls the major muscle of mastication, or chewing); Inhibition.  In other words, NTI = Noiciceptive Trigeminal Inhibitor, a device that inhibits the electrical signals to the large cheek muscles, and thereby comfortably controls nightly teeth grinding, bruxing, clenching, and the subsequent pain associated with it.

Q.  Won't teeth supraerupt while wearing the NTI at night?  A. No. The NTI device is worn primarily while sleeping. Teeth can not supra-erupt since the teeth are stimulated by eating (the NTI-tss matrix is NOT worn during/while eating)

Q.  I heard that some people may get a little open bite.  Is this true?  A.  Although uncommon, if there is any occurrence of a small open bite (space between the upper and lower front teeth) during treatment, this is due NOT to supereruption of the back teeth, but to a better and more healthy repositioning of the TMJ jaw joint.  It also only occurs in the reduction of TMJ symptoms!  These tiny openings are hardly noticeable!  Note: Dr. Reifman has fabricated over 300 NTI night guards, and has seen only a handful of open bites.  In those cases, the patients are the happiest they've been, due to suppression of their clenching, headaches, and jaw pain when wearing the nti.

Q. Can you swallow it?  A. Made properly, the NTI device cannot be removed without using your hands.

Q. Is there a difference between the NTI and the traditional dental nightguard device or TMJ splint?  A. Yes. Traditional flat-plane splints and nightguard devices provide a surface for you to "bite down on." New studies show, however, that these devices can actually increase the intensity of your clenching reflex, often to over 104% of your normal bite.* The NTI is smaller and more unobtrusive than a nightguard and appears to be more successful at doing what nightguards try to do. This is because all of your opposing teeth contact against a nightguard, so you can still clench and grind and tire out your temporal muscles. Your back teeth cannot contact when you wear an NTI, so the temporal muscles can’t contract.

With the NTI in place, your teeth are protected from excessive force, and the temporal muscles get a chance to relax.  In fact, high-intensity clenching has recently been found to be the real cause of the problem. With the advent of the revolutionary NTI device, we can begin to solve the real problem: actually preventing your back teeth from clenching intensely and coming into contact with each other. Stop intense clenching, stop the source of the pain.  NTI suppresses the clenching reflex by preventing the posterior teeth from contacting each other. There is no surface to bite down on or bite into. The temporalis muscles are kept from contracting with their usual intensity.  The clenching reflex is suppressed and almost eliminated.  The NTI helps to keep the clenching and bruxing from happening!

According to Dr. Reifman:  "I am very impressed with the NTI nightguard. To date, I've treated over 300 patients using the NTI, with very good to usually excellent results.  If you’re using a nightguard and still grinding your teeth at night, or waking up with jaw pain or clenching-related headaches, the NTI may be the best therapeutic modality available for you."

Migraine Relief: "The NTI has also received FDA approval for use in people who suffer from migraine headaches, and has been shown to reduce migraine symptoms significantly in 75% of people using the device.

Whiplash and TMJ Injuries
Whiplash may produce delayed jaw pain!

CHICAGO--One in three people exposed to whiplash trauma is at risk of developing delayed TMJ symptoms that may require treatment, according to research recently published in The Journal of the American Dental Association.

Have you ever been in an automobile accident, or know a friend who has hurt their spine through whiplash?  Cervical spine injury, caused by so-called whiplash, has had an alarming increase in recent years, no doubt due to  increased traffic density, and the accompanying frequency of auto accidents.  Whiplash injuries are capable of producing a large number of symptoms. These symptoms can include headache, neck pain, shoulder pain, dizziness and tinnitus. Jaw pain may or may not be a prevalent complaint. However, doctors seeing whiplash patients must be aware that whiplash can cause TMJ injury and that the symptoms can mimic cervical (neck bones) injury.  Our office helps to screen patients who complain of jaw-related problems with a past history of whiplash.
